UITM in technology upgrade

UNIVERSITI Teknologi Mara (UiTM) has drawn up a five-year information and communications technology (ICT) strategic plan to undertake key tech initiatives to help position itself as a world- class institution of higher learning.

Among the initiatives under the strategic plan are optimising the ICT infrastructure, enhancing ICT applications, and providing more comprehensive networking facilities, said UiTM's centre for integrated information system (CIIS) director associate Professor Dr Mat Ikram Yusof.

According to him, the university expects to fully link up the main campus in Shah Alam and its other 14 branches nationwide with wireless local area network (WLAN) facilities by end of next year.

Efforts are also underway to upgrade, in stages, its databases and applications such as the financial accounting information system (Fais), students information system (Isis), and staff resources information system (Stars) to ensure better and efficient management of critical information and data, he told Tech&U last week.

Mat Ikram said UiTM recently called for a tender for an ICT infrastructure project that involves the supply of 2,500 new PCs, on top of the existing 12,000 PCs located at the main campus alone.

The batch of new PCs are expected to incorporate new security technologies to protect against malware and other viruses. The systems will come equipped with remote management facilities to ensure effective healing of virus-infected desktops without requiring site visits.

According to Mat Ikram, UiTM has an annual budget allocation of RM13 million for the maintenance of ICT systems.

MDIC launch a norm-breaking step into the future

KUALA LUMPUR: Limkokwing University has created new partnerships with high-end digital technology providers through a new initiative called the Malaysia Digital Innovation Centre (MDIC).

It was launched recently by Minister of Higher Education Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin at the Limkokwing’s Cyberjaya campus.

The university’s founder president Tan Sri Datuk Seri Dr Lim Kok Wing said the creation of MDIC is in response to the prime minister’s call for norm-breaking efforts to engineer human capital that is wired to the future.

He said MDIC’s thrust also responds to the prime minister’s transformation programme, which places priority on education as the vehicle to move from middle income to high income status by 2020.

For over 20 years, the university has played a pivotal role in promoting creativity and innovation as the engine of progress for the country, a role it continues with breakthrough ideas much like the digital innovation centre.

“This university is possibly the world’s largest digital content training facility. For this reason, this campus has become a talent hub for some of the brightest brains in the world. Here, high tech accelerators are created to generate high end products and services that are second to none in the country,” he said.

Meanwhile, Khaled said he envisioned MDIC as an ‘excellent infrastructure’ to push the migration of skilled talent into the industry.

He said MDIC is timely considering Malaysia’s efforts to propel creativity and innovation in every sphere of its development process, particularly in the local digital industry.

A press release said MDIC caters for those with a passion to acquire the best in digital technology and who want to be future-ready to handle new industry challenges taking place with every tick of the clock.

MDIC offers internationally-recognised digital-friendly programmes namely Digital Imaging, Interactive & Multimedia Design, Animation & Multimedia Design, Digital e-Games, Design Innovation, Visual Communication, Web Design & Technology, Creative Multimedia, Sonic Design, Digital Film and Television, and Digital Communication.

It houses state-of-the-art training facilities including high tech computer incubation rooms, training and lecture theatres, 3D LED screen, exhibition and conference, corporate boardroom, reception lounge and business facilities and olympic-sized swimming pool.

The MDIC is also said to be an accelerator to nurture the most imaginative and creative minds for creative industries, where essential test-beds are built to create new innovations for wealth-generation.
